Introduction

General navigation is an essential skill-set required for licensing, such as the Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), Flight Dispatchers, Flight Operations officers ensuring a pilot's ability to maintain awareness even without modern aids. Despite modern GPS systems, general navigation provides crucial redundancy, allowing pilots and mariners to operate safely if technology fails or provides inaccurate information. General Navigation covers the fundamental principles of directing an aircraft from position to position, including earth shape, magnetism, charts, and dead reckoning. It involves calculating positions, distances, tracks, and fuel, often using a navigation computer (e.g., CRP-5) to solve speed, time, and wind velocity problems. Core Concepts and Topics Earth Model, Latitude, longitude, meridians, and parallel lines. Direction & Magnetism: True, Magnetic, and Compass North, including Variation and Deviation. Distance and Time: Conversion between units and local time, UTC, and time zones. Charts & Projections: Understanding Lambert Conformal, Mercator, and Polar Stereographic charts. Navigation Methods: Dead Reckoning (DR), In-Flight Navigation (Fixes), and inertial navigation systems. It covers concepts such as Great Circles, Rhumb Lines, .CP and PNR calculations.   • Understand Earth Geometry, co-ordinate system, great circle and Rhumb lines
  • Know how to calculate the distance between 2 points on earth once their coordinates are known
  • Perform rapid, accurate calculations for speed, time, distance, and fuel consumption
  • Know about flight computer CR-5 and its usage for various types of calculations
  • Select & interpret appropriate chart projections like Mercator, Lambert etc. to determine bearings and distances.
